European Resource Centre for Alternatives in Higher Education
With Lord Dowding Fund support, Dr David Dewhurst, University of Edinburgh and Dr Jan van der Valk, Netherlands, are setting up a European Resource Centre for Alternatives in Higher Education (EURCA).
In 1998, The European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods sponsored a workshop on ‘Alternatives to the use of animals in higher education’, which concluded that despite the presence of good non-animal alternatives, many animals are still used for teaching and training. The main reasons for this misuse of animals are that alternatives are not known to teachers, information is limited, and so too are opportunities to try alternatives.
The EURCA plans to disseminate information about non-animal alternatives for use in higher education, and encourage their use by taking the EURCA data to scientific meetings, visiting colleges and setting up an internet website.
Also, with Lord Dowding Fund support Dr Dewhurst will continue his work in Edinburgh to produce further computer programmes for use in higher education. This includes developing a ‘virtual human’ simulation for pharmacology students.
Please help us end the abuse of animals, please make a donation today…
