Every year millions of animals die in experiments. It doesn’t have to be like this. There are better ways. Through sponsorship, publicity and promotion of cutting edge non-animal research, the Lord Dowding Fund (LDF) shows that animal techniques have no place in 21st century science. Lord Dowding Fund grants have supported a wide range of research including analytical techniques; cell, tissue and organ culture; epidemiology; computer and mathematical models; and audio-visual aids; all providing effective science without animals. A model for testing the toxicity of dental fillings, developed with LDF support, was accepted as a British Standard technique. In the first year of the new millennium, we committed a third of a million pounds to research projects. Here are some of our projects:
