Support mounts for National Centre

Support is growing for our proposals for a National Centre for the Replacement of Animals in Experiments. Following NAVS and LDF evidence, the House of Lords Select Committee recommended a “Centre for the three R’s [Refinement, Reduction, Replacement of animals] be set up...". The Government responded that it would explore this and reiterated the pledge in June, saying that the Interdepartmental Group on the 3Rs, led by the Home Office, would issue a progress report in the autumn. We believe it is vital that a new centre drives forward non-animal research rather than tinkering with animal experiments – a centre is needed that concentrates on replacement.

A joint proposal for a National Centre, circulated by the LDF and Dr Hadwen Trust, has already received the support of over 60 scientists and over 30 celebrities including Brian Blessed, John Peel, Julie Burchill and Jenny Seagrove. MPs have expressed support, including Ian Cawsey MP, Norman Baker MP, and Ann Widdecombe MP, who says: “I do support your proposals. I am also interested in helping the Fund in achieving the creation of the Centre."
